Design Diploma Show - Product And Industrial Design

Yoooohooo.

Today I bring to you a very very very very special bike! Imagine a bike that enables you to ride in the snow, where you get to sit rather comfortably and you don't have to worry about your safety because it is so stable! Is this for real?! Believe it or not, our very own Johnathan Siew from the Diploma in Product & Industrial Design had created this very very special bike, Xecle Rider.

It's so cool that I hope it gets sold in the market soon and who knows, maybe maybe one day, I will be able to ride it when I decide to go on my snowy holidays to the Swiss Alps or something. *dreaming*

The Xecle Rider

The Xecle Rider, upclose.

Our dear designer that had created this wonder creation has decided to be a mystery to us all. boohoo..I didn't even get to meet him at the Design Diploma Show! If not, I would have asked him to let me have the chance to ride this around school because it is so cool and it would definitely be a head turner!

Tomorrow we bring you the last installment of the Design Diploma Show. Look out for this space for your dose of fun, creativity and live action from TP!

East View Secondary School Science Week Workshops 24th and 25th March

We have visitors on campus! Say HELLO to the students from East View Secondary School. (EVSS)

As part of the school's science week, EVSS students were invited to Temasek Engineering School and Temasek Applied Science School to attend workshops at TP.

First up, let's take a look at what Temasek Engineering School had in store for them. The students were introduced to the Diploma in Interactive Media Technology (IMT) and the Diploma Media and Communication Technology (MET) where they got to experience 3D applications... hands-on!

The highlight of the day was the Interactive Digital Centre Asia (IDC Asia) where they get to play with the latest 3D graphics. Interested in what 3D graphics can do? Take a look at the ICube below!

One moment they find themselves flying in the MRT.

The train station looks real, but it's FAKE .

Trying out the head controller.

The white shades.

And the next, it's Touchdown in the UNIVERSE guys!

Exploring the orbit.

Woah! The Sun is so close.

SPECTACULAR! We were in the same room all along. This Icube practically brings you to another world once you put on the white shades. Using flat images and current technology, it allows you to visualise places even without running all the way there. This reminds me of the recent Mac tv ad on their internet delivery. Way Cool!

But that's not all. They even have a Touchlight which allows you to FEEL and SENSE without TOUCHING the screen at all.. Take a look at the short video clip below

Impressive. It helps us to conceptualise devices which do not even exist. You can feel the product even before making it. Any future 3D developers out there?

Now movinng on to the next stop: Temasek Applied Science School

DIY seems to be the fad now. From accessories, clothes to decorations of room and all. Ever thought of doing something new? Imagine telling someone you are in the soap-making business, making soap by recycling used cooking oil. Yes, that's right. COOKING OIL.

Basically, just pour the mixture into the mould and it will turn out like this.

The finished soap!

To top it off, the chemicals used for doing this are basically very simple, NaOH and KOH and loads of used cooking oil. Equipment can also be found in your school labs easily, really. The best part is, since you are recycling used cooking oil, cost of making the soap are very low! This will definitely make the perfect gift for your mum. I am sure they would be more than glad to drown you out with their used cooking oil. HAHA

And more pictures to go.

Getting ready for their first lab session in Temasek Polytechnic.

Putting on their lab outfits.

Waiting for the stirrer to finish its job.

What does the thermometer read?

And not to forget, some fun of course!

The girls posing in the lab!

The students were really satisfied and proud of the soap they made with their own hands, leaving the lab with their creations. Cooking oil gets turned into soap? Goddness, My mum is going to flip over this.

Better keep this video from her lest she tries her luck at home. haha

Oh ya. Grab those photos taken here people! If you have any to upload, feel free to email us at tp4me08@gmail.com We want them too!

Till then, adios!

IIT Show Finale

HERE IS THE GRAND FINALE FOR THE IIT PROJECT SHOW.

Hmm...as you guys might know in Poly we gotta do some presentations from time to time about our projects. Some students from the Diploma in Information Technology have developed something to made our presentations even more interesting with the use of Lightdraw.

Lightdraw is a revolutionary way of interacting with a computer screen using ordinary light sources or laser pointers. It offers an alternative interfacing method with the computer using light. It also allows multiple users to simultaneously interact with any part of the screen from afar, simply by pointing and moving their light sources across the screen.

This is so interesting! If only this was out in the market then all my presentations would have been so interesting!

Here is a short video clip on how exciting this project is.

IIT Show 2008 Part 2

HELLOOOOOOOOOO!

So as promised I am back with more IIT show projects for all of you! Do you guys know how our computer games are developed? Well these guys from the Diploma in Games and Entertainment Technology certainly do!

The guys had developed Artificial Intelligence in Games that can be incorporated into the computer games such as WOW or DOTA or Command & Conquer where the movement of troops become more realistic so that you guys who enjoy playing such games derive more satisfaction from the upgraded graphics!

A screen shot of the program they had developed.

Don't the graphics look more realistic?

Ah besides these guys from the Dip in Games & Entertainment Technology, a group of students from the Dip in Mobile & Wireless Computing and Dip in Internet & Multimedia Development, had developed a special program with Hewlett Packer (HP) to come up with something interactive for the students of Tao Nan Primary School when they had their learning trip to the zoo. (ooo I love the zoo!)

Titled, Zooscape, an interactive game was developed to play on handheld devices such as PDAs. As the students walk around the zoo and encounter hotspots, they would be prompted to answer quiz questions related to the hotspot.

The image the students will see on their PDA.

The kind of questions that would be reflected
when the students got to the hotspot.

So you see, their projects are so interesting! People like me definitely can't work such things out but they can! Thank God for people who study IT. *starts being dramatic*

Design Diploma Show- Interior Architecture & Design

Hi punks! Remember the last entry I did on Ipseity Boutique? Now I bring to you another project which was showcased during that same Design Diploma Show. Under the Diploma in Interior Architecture & Design, this project is titled Chek Jawa - Discovering Singapore's Biodiversity. This is the design of the exhibition area, concept is inspired by the kelong. The concept has therefore the key elements of a kelong theme in terms of forms and choice of materials, which explains all the wood.
Nice isn't it! Again, coming up with something like this requires loads of planning. Starting from these designing process, to finally the storyboard.Uh huh, now after seeing all these detailed planning, you would probably be thinking, this group has done a lot of work! Now punks, I have a surprise for you. This project was done by ONLY ONE PERSON! This person! Deon Choo from the Diploma in Interior Architecture & Design did all of this on her own. Seriously man, if she is in the webteam, you can do away with Frayon and Eudora and even me.

Hmmmmm.....

Solid as Bone,

Fanning

IIT Diploma Show

*Phew* I just got back from the Temasek School of Informatics and IT (IIT) Diploma Show. And boy was I impressed at how much the students have accomplished in the IT field. I was so amazed by their projects that I felt like such a noob!

Basically all the final-year projects completed by the IIT students were displayed for the invited guests to view. They were all so engrossed (and so was I) that they had a gazillion and one questions. Poor me had to patiently wait for my turn.

One project that caught my eye, was the one created by Randall and Josias from the Diploma in Cyber and Digital Security. They created this system where the program uses face recognition to unlock your stuff.

Basically how it works is that after registering with the program, it will then recognise your facial features before activating the system. Of course, you would need a computer and a webcam at the moment to make this program work.

Can you imagine using this system for your home security in future?! IT WOULD BE SO AWESOME BECAUSE I NO LONGER HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT KEYS!!! But then again, I wonder when I can buy my own house to live in. *sigh*
Here is Randall (in gray) and Josias(with the red tie)! The grand master creators of this project!
In the process of detecting their facial features.

It's a really funky gadget that I would love to have. It sure will be much safer than our simple locks and keys!

Stay tuned while we bring more awesome projects from the IIT diploma show in the coming weeks!

The Robo Grand Prix 2008 Part 2

Hello punks.
.
I am here to continue yesterday's post on the Singapore Robo Grand Prix 2008 at Funan the DigitaLife Mall. For those who were at the event, you would know of the many different categories in the competition. However, due to space constraints, we shall only focus on the Secondary Schools Premier League Award List!
.
Awarded Merit, is Anglican High School coming in at the 8th position with their robo 'Razor'!
Coming in before them at 7th position is Tampines Secondary School with 'Omega 1'!
At the 6th position we have Anglican High School again, this time with 'Judgement'. Counting down now to the 5th position, we have Bishan Park Secondary School with their robo 'Deep Red'!

And now, our 3rd runner up is Bishan Park Secondary School again! With their robo 'SPOY'.

Coming just before them as the 2nd runner up is Pei Hwa Secondary School! With their robo 'Medallion Swift'.
And now, our 1st runner up is......... Woodlands Ring Secondary School with their robo 'HaHax =D'.
(......... Uh huh, that is the real name of their robo.)Now punks, it is time to announce the champion for the Secondary Schools Premier League. It is none other than .........

WOODLANDS RING SECONDARY SCHOOL! yes! again!!

So punks, the next time you need a fast robo, you know which school to ask from. In fact, I think I need a 'Fanning' robo to chase Frayon around, I get tired too easily these days. But will he be able to tell the difference between that robo and me? Hmm..

.

What? Did I just hear someone shouting 'Frayon is too thick to notice any difference?' That is so mean!

.

But, you are right.

The Robo Grand Prix 2008! Part 1

If you were at Funan DigitaLife Mall last week, you definitely can't miss the Singapore Robo Grand Prix 2008 organised by Temasek Poly. From Friday onwards all the way to Sunday, teams from the various institutions battled it out in this annual Robo Race event.

The rules are based on the the Japan Robotrace Competition. To make things more challenging for the contestants, the course pattern is not known prior to the commencement of the race. It's a test of the wits, speed and technical competency in their programming skills.

Just before the flag off

A contestant from Woodlands Secondary heating up his racer

Each race track is divided in many different sectors. One track can have up to as many as 20 or even 30 sectors. Contestants have to program how fast or slow their racer is supposed to move at the various sectors that consists of straight and curvy bends. But don't be mistaken about being the fast and the furious. Tweak a notch too high, and your might just send your racer into loose control, thus getting disqualified for going off track.

Before the start of the competition, all Robo "Vain Pots" had a chance to display their mechancical beauty infront of a panel of judges in the "Best Decorated Robot" category. Let's take a look at some of them.

Oooh... Looks hot?

A black bulldozer?

Off to Terminal 3!

Baa Baa Black Sheep have you any wool?

Where's the rabbit for this race?

These are the winners for the "Best Decorated Robot", not in terms of merit.

1. Ghostly - Woodlands Ring Sec

2. Silent Cartographer - Dunman High School

3. Radillion - Dunman High School

4. Smiley - Dunman High School

5. Medallion 2 - Pei Hwa Sec School

6. Hougang Racer 2 - Hougang Sec School

7. Hougang Racer 3 - Hougang Sec School

8. Speedometer - Hua Yi Sec School

That's all we have for today. Stay tune till tomorrow as we reveal the remaining winners. Ciao!
